In 1975, Bernard Baudry began to cobble together his now 25 hectare estate. Bernard is retired now but followed by son Matthieu who began working with his father in 2000 after a vinous rumspringa that included time in California and NZ. The terroir-driven Chinon “Les Granges” is made from 25 year old Cabernet Franc vines grown in mixed sand, gravel, and clay soils. Fermented and briefly aged entirely in concrete, the wine’s vibrant fruit shines and provides immediate pleasure. With tangy cherry and a hint of smoke, this 2014 needs no great fare, just simple charcuterie and a thirsty drinker.
